theories of asian architecture

This module focuses on architectural evolution in Asia, emphasizing tradition, modernity, and globalization. We explored the interplay between history, culture, and society in shaping architectural design and construction technologies. We learnt the architectural elements of India, Malaysia, China, South-East Asia, Modern and Post Modern architecture in Asia. Through hands-on learning via site visits, our tutors linked classroom knowledge to real-world applications, gaining insights into traditional values and evaluating urbanism and cultural sustainability. The course enhances understanding of Asian architecture and urbanism, culminating in research posters, sketch journals and oral presentations to interpret Asian architectural language.

Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street

This assignment highlights how to analyze the key elements of traditional streets by examining both the physical aspects of architecture and space, and the less tangible socio-cultural characteristics. We were given a choice of streets in Malaysia to conduct the study, and I chose the streets on Kampung Bahru. We were to take pictures and identify the different architectural elements in the streets, keeping in mind the identity and cultural significance of the area. We had to then document our observations in a sketch journal accompanied by a written summary.

self reflection

Through this project, I was able to dive deeper into learning about the cultural significances, socio-economic characteristics and physical facades of Kampung Bahru. The site visit deemed to be a very interesting one, as I rode the MRT for the first time, and truly experienced the local's way of living and transportation. Upon arrival at Kampung Bahru, there were many examples of traditional shophouses, traditional facades, historical buildings and architectural facades. The entire area captured the essence of Malaysian culture, through their food and community engagement. In terms of the sketches itself, it was quite challenging to capture every detail of Kampung Bahru, as it was filled to the brim with many examples that allude to the overall theme of my study: A Symphony of Old and New. Overall, I would like to think I captured the overall essence of this theme through the sketches. However, there is room for more improvement as I have not written enough on each page to explain my reasoning as to why I have chosen these sites and sketches.

Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture

We were tasked with analyzing key issues identified during our site visit in Assignment 1. Through problem-based learning and structured group discussions with our tutors, we created a poster that highlights our research questions that cover architectural facades, traditions, preservation of culture, sustainable development, public usability and experience, and economic challenges. In addition to this, we were also tasked with creating a presentation video to showcase our solutions to the issues. Through this, we are able to shed light on issues faced in Kampung Bahru.

self reflection

In this project, working in a group really aided in combining all of our founded issues of Kampung Bahru into this assignment. We first compiled all of our research and information from Project 1 into the research proposal document, where we narrowed it down to the main issues that w can find potential solutions for. Our tutor, Ms. Sucharita, helped us greatly by guiding us to think of solutions that are architecturally sound. The site visit to Kampung Bahru helped us gain insight into the local's point of view on the modernization of Kampung Bahru, and how that affects them and their businesses. We also spoke to a couple of tourists to gain insight into what their point of view of Kampung Bahru was. With all of this information collected, it helped us think of solutions that cater to the locals needs. We tackled solutions such as pedestrianization, green facades, community centers and more. All in all, this project helped me personally view Kampung Bahru as a hub that needs to be preserved, as there are many historical buildings and shophouses that depend on locals and tourists alike. Our proposed solutions cater to the improvement of Kampung Bahru, as opposed to modernization. Our team was very co-operative during this project, and everyone contributed equally to complete the project in a timely manner and input their information where necessary.
