design communication

The module introduces fundamental skills for the appropriate communication of architectural design. It engages different means of visualization and expression of space and spatial ideas through architectural drawings to prepare students with the skills required in design projects. These skills are taught through a series of freehand and constructed drawing held both outdoors and in the studio. The teaching and learning approach for the module will be lecture and tutorial based, with students engaging with blended learning experience during the lecture and tutorial session.

01 Starchitect

Architecture students all over the world are always inspired to produce architectural designs that mimic the idols’ works and styles. The captivating forms, the order and principles, the clever play of light and shadow, or simply the modesty of the design in its context, are among the reasons the starchitects’ works were adored.

02 Farnsworth House

The Farnsworth House was designed and constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1945 and 1951.
He created buildings with free and open space within a minimal framework, using expressed structural columns.

03 Space & Sensory

Architecture, in addition to pleasing the eye and meeting the needs of the human body (i.e. anthropometrics and ergonomics) must also satisfy the needs of the human soul (mind, emotion and will). Therefore as architects, we should not just make spaces that are beautiful, functional and fit for purpose, we should also consider if our spaces are inspiring, poetic, or uplifting.

Engaging in the "Design Communication" module was a transformative journey, equipping me with essential skills in AutoCAD and the art of architectural representation. Navigating the intricacies of drafting floor plans, sections, elevations, and axonometric drawings expanded my proficiency in design communication. The accessibility of the lecturers proved instrumental; their approachability facilitated a seamless learning experience. Their patience and willingness to assist, coupled with clear instruction, fostered a supportive environment. This module not only enhanced my technical prowess but also underscored the collaborative and communicative facets of design. I now approach architectural communication with newfound confidence and a heightened appreciation for precision and clarity.
