building materials
& construction

This module educates students on fundamental building construction and materials used in small to medium-scale projects. It covers building elements (substructure and superstructure) and materials like concrete, masonry, timber, metal, and glass, focusing on their manufacturing processes, properties, and applications. Ongoing assessments, including assignments and tutorial activities, will ensure students meet the module's objectives.

The task is to conduct a case study on a building in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. The group will identify and analyze five architectural and two structural building materials used in the building. They must also select one material that impacts the user experience and provide a detailed illustration of its installation process. The findings will be presented on an A1 size board.

This assignment aims to help students demonstrate their knowledge of building construction through detailed drawings, emphasizing building elements. It seeks to develop an awareness of the relationship between design and technical knowledge. The assignment highlights the importance of appropriate construction methods, structural integration, and material selection in successful design projects, underscoring the need for understanding construction technical details and building design.

self reflection

This module helped me understand the crucial role materials play in building construction. From how materials are sourced or made, to their installation and final appearance on a building, it’s clear that each material is chosen carefully after a lot of thought. Factors like sustainability, durability, look, and function all matter in making the right choice.

I also realized that there’s much more to building sections than what I learned in the first semester. The materials used in a building significantly affect its sections, impacting things like structure, insulation, soundproofing, and overall design. This module made me see how important it is to consider materiality in every aspect of architectural design.

Learning about the different properties of materials and how they interact with each other and the environment was eye-opening. It highlighted the importance of selecting materials that work well together to create a cohesive and efficient building. This deeper understanding of materiality and sections has given me a new perspective on how to approach architectural projects, ensuring that every element is thoughtfully integrated for the best possible outcome.
